A falling film chiller is a type of heat exchanger used for cooling liquids. Here’s a description: A falling film chiller consists of a series of vertically arranged tubes or plates through which a liquid flows downward as a thin film. The liquid to be cooled enters the top of the chiller and is distributed evenly across the top of these tubes or plates. As it flows downward due to gravity, it forms a thin film along the surface of the tubes or plates. Simultaneously, a coolant, often chilled water or a refrigerant, flows through the interior of these tubes or plates in the opposite direction. Heat is transferred from the liquid flowing downward (the process fluid) to the coolant flowing inside the tubes or plates, thereby cooling the process fluid. The design of falling film chillers allows for efficient heat transfer due to the large surface area available for contact between the process fluid and the coolant. They are commonly used in various industrial applications where precise temperature control of liquids is required, such as in food processing, chemical manufacturing, and HVAC systems.

In falling film chillers, recirculated water cascades in a thin, continuous falling film over vertical laser-welded stainless steel evaporator plates. Because water is flowing continuously at high velocity, it cools instantly to 0.5°C–1°C without the risk of freezing or bursting tubes.
Continuous HTST milk pasteurization demands instant cooling of large milk volumes down to 4°C. The ice water from a falling film chiller provides maximum log mean temperature difference (LMTD), drastically reducing pasteurizer PHE plate surface requirements.
Aviva utilizes AISI SS 304 or SS 316 pillow plate evaporator modules laser-welded for high thermal transfer and tested to 30 bar pressure, housed inside an insulated stainless steel water tank.
Because the evaporating temperature can operate closer to 0°C without ice buildup hazards, refrigeration compressor suction pressure remains higher, cutting electrical power consumption by 15% to 25%.
